BRODIAN, Laura: WFIU, 1979-80; KQED, 1982-87, KUSC, 1987-88; KFAC, 1989; KKGO/KKJZ, 1990-97; KKHI, 1995-98, KGIL, 1997-98; KMZT, Los Angeles 1995-present; She is listed in Don Barret’s LOS ANGELES RADIO PEOPLE.
Laura started in Los Angeles as the host of "Music Through The Night" on KUSC, which was syndicated. During the '90s she was host of Delta Symphony, an in-flight program for Delta Airlines, and worked morning drive for then-KKGO's sister station in San Francisco, KKHI. After KKHI went off the air in 1998, she continued as a relief announcer for KKGO, which changed its call letters to KMZT ("K-Mozart").
Born in Newark, Laura grew up in Union, New Jersey, She has three degrees in music[music education, music history, and piano], two from the Indiana School of Music. While Laura was working on her Ph.D.she criticised the campus station, WFIU-Bloomington, for mispronouncing so many of the classical artists and selections. "They told me if I was so smart, why didn't I come down to the station, read an announcer’s test, and see for myself how hard this job really is?. I did and they put me on their air for two years."
She always had a love for music. Laura started playing the piano at age seven. After completing her doctorate in 1982, she spent five years announcing classical music at KQED-San Francisco.
Laura is a fan – big time - of science fiction. She loves to read sci-fi books and recreate sci-fi and historical costumes. It was in the sci-fi environment that she met her husband Kelly Freas.
For seven years Kelly was the artist for the front, back, and inside covers of Mad Magazine. He has painted over 1,000 science fiction book and magazine covers. Laura is an illustrator in her own right. Her first nationally published illustrations appeared in Weird Tales, Analog, and MZB's Fantasy Magazine. She is also a graphic artist and website designer as well. She’s also a good cook, much to Kelly’s delight.
Laura relishes the time she spends on air, and maintains that being a classical music radio announcer is the perfect job for her. "I have always had a deep and abiding love for classical music; using the radio to invite listeners to participate with me in the enjoyment of this wonderful music is the only job I've ever had in which I feel competent, confident and comfortable. I love it.”
