Rick Houghton was born in Liverpool, England and by the age of nine, was quite clear about what he wanted to do. He was 10 when he started introducing songs on his parent’s record player. At the tender age of 14 he became a tea boy at the BBC station Radio Merseyside and this led to answering ‘phones, editing tapes and finally producing shows. Noticed by a senior producer at nearby Radio City, Rick was asked to produce Pete Waterman’s new Saturday morning radio programme. This move led to more radio experience, the chance to work alongside one of the UK’s biggest music moguls and a UK tour with Kylie Minogue.
Rick, by now 16 became the youngest commercial radio presenter when he accepted the evening show position at Devon’s Plymouth Sound Radio. It was less than a year before Radio City came knocking again and this time Rick would join the staff as evening show host. Rick enjoyed four years at his beloved ‘home’ radio station; the listening figures for his show have still to be beaten.
‘For me the fondest memories of my career are from Radio City, it was the radio station I grew up listening to, and to work there and mingle with people I had seen as heroes was just amazing’.
Rick had now become hot property in the UK radio industry; he was seen as fresh, young and talented; so it was no surprise that he was poached in 1994 to present the drive time show at Piccadilly Key 103. The radio station was the UK’s biggest outside London and many saw this move as a big step up the career ladder.
It was during this time that Rick first became recognised as a talented Voice Artist, lending his vocals to imaging for Radio Aire in Leeds and then a big contract for Pepsi in North America.
Rick now lives and works in Dubai – United Arab Emirates. He continues to present a daily radio show, hosts TV programmes, commentates on motor sport and provides voices for some of the leading production houses, locally and around the world.
